Fern Golensky
- The Best thing in life are Rottweilers
When Fern Golensky accompanied a friend to a city dog pound to help
her pick out a dog some years back, it was one of the most disturbing and life-changing events of her life. "It was my first experience with
a pound, and it literally made me sick to my stomach. I've always loved animals, and seeing so many that were scared and unwanted changed my
life. I can't do anything about their pasts, but I can do something about their futures."
Fern has been involved in Northeast Rottweiler Rescue, where she serves as the Assistant Adoptions Coordinator, for many years
now. She also has three Rotties of her own and calls them "the best things in my life. I can't tell you how much enjoyment my
husband and I get from them. We're so lucky to have them!"; Her children often tease Fern by saying she's more devoted to the dogs
than she ever was to them. "I guess getting the kids' and dogs' names mixed up doesn't help."
Then a couple of years ago, she heard through a friend at work about an organization that saves the lives of unwanted animals
instead of destroying them, and she knew she had to get involved with Our Companions.
Although she is no longer employed, Fern's background is in management and sales. She puts those skills to good use as an
ambassador for Our Companions. She helps with the lead program, and she's on the Dogman Committee, as well.
Another of Fern's interests in helping senior citizens, something she has done for at least 17 years now. "I honestly don't
remember what prompted me to get started. I can only tell you that I find it very enjoyable. I read somewhere that getting old
isn't for sissies. When I listen to these people and hear what they've endured physically and emotionally, I'm amazed." One of
Fern's Rotties is a registered therapy dog. "We go to seniors' homes to brighten their day, and boy, does it!"
Fern brightens her own days, she jokes, with "shopping and shoes. I also love to run and, oddly enough at my age, play with
weights at the gym." Still, she knows she will also devote time to her work with animals and seniors. "I know this sounds corny,
but the truth is, I've been pretty lucky. I've enjoyed a good life, and I feel I owe it. As long as there are people older than me
or unwanted pets, I'll be doing it."
