The “Ashford Feral Fix”

Friendz Making a Difference

Ashford is a rural community with a small population spread out over many acres of land. It is a beautiful area offering residents the opportunity to live with nature and enjoy the many benefits it presents.  Within this beauty, however, lies a problem, invisible to most and of no concern to others.

For some time, Laura Jordan, an Ashford resident and Our Companions Feral Sterile Program Director, noticed ill-treated, malnourished, and suffering animals moving through the wooden environs of her community.  They were feral cats, unfortunate animals, abandoned by owners or born in the wild.

For over two years, Our Companions has had an active Sterile Feral Program in a partnership with Ashford’s North Veterinary Clinic.  They have provided support and valuable information to interested individuals regarding feral cats.  Despite these efforts, it was obvious a more active involvement was needed.
Not one to sit by the sidelines, Laura Jordan sought a solution. Fortunately, a foundation devoted to issues affecting the well-being of animals gave their support for the cats and a vote of confidence in Our Companions’ ability in handling the situation.

The PetSmart Foundation awarded Our Companions a $22,900, two-year grant, which started this February, to support a town-wide sterilization effort in Ashford.  The defined goal is to spay or neuter 520 cats for a nominal fee or at no cost to Ashford residents.  Whether or not someone is charged a fee, which would be at most $25 per cat, is to be determined by the number of cats and the financial situation of the persons involved.
The PetSmart Foundation’s grant is a milestone in bringing about a solution to the tragic reality of the unsterilized feral cat’s existence.  By working together, North Veterinary Clinic, PetSmart Charities and Our Companions Domestic Animal Sanctuary will provide a progressive, life-saving program for hundreds of cats.
